Excerpt: The Charteuse de Champmol, formally the Chartreuse de la Sainte-Trinité de Champmol, was a Carthusian monastery on the outskirts of Dijon, which is now in France, but in the 15th century was the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy. The monastery was founded in 1383 by Duke Philip the Bold to provide a dynastic burial place for the Valois Dukes of Burgundy, and operated until it was dissolved in 1791, during the French Revolution. Called “the grandest project in a reign renowned for extravagance”, it was lavishly enriched with works of art, and the dispersed remnants of its collection remain key to the understanding of the art of the period. Purchase of the land and quarrying of materials began in 1377, but construction did not begin until 1383, under the architect Druet de Dammartin from Paris, who had previously designed the Duke’s chateau at Sluis, and been an assistant in work at the Louvre. A committee of councillors from Dijon supervised the construction for the Duke, who was often elsewhere. By 1388 the church was consecrated, and most construction probably completed. The monastery was built for twenty-four choir monks, instead of the usual twelve in a Carthusian house, and two more were endowed to celebrate the birth in 1433 of Charles the Bold. These lived semi-hermitic lives in their individual small houses when not in the chapel. There would also have been non-ordained monks, servants, novices, and other workers. When founded, Champmol was “two arrow shots” outside the city gates, but is now inside the modern city boundaries. At this time the city had about 10,000 inhabitants and was the largest in Burgundy proper, though smaller than the cities of the territories in the Netherlands recently inherited by the Duke through his wife. Excerpt: David Regenald Lynch (born January 20, 1946) is an American filmmaker and visual artist. Over a lengthy career, Lynch has employed a distinctive and unorthodox approach to narrative filmmaking (dubbed Lynchian), which has become instantly recognizable to many audiences and critics worldwide. Lynch’s films are known for nightmarish and dreamlike images and meticulously crafted sound design. Lynch’s work often depicts a seedy underside of small town America (particularly Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks), or sprawling California metropolises (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and his latest release, Inland Empire). Beginning with his experimental film school feature Eraserhead (1977), he has maintained a strong cult following despite inconsistent commercial success. Lynch has received three Academy Award

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Luis Buñuel Portolés (22 February 1900 – 29 July 1983) was a Spanish filmmaker who also acquired Mexican citizenship and worked in Spain, Mexico, France and the United States. He is considered one of the finest directors in the history of cinema. Buñuel was born on February 22, 1900 in Calanda, a small town in the province of Teruel, in Aragon, Spain, to Leonardo Buñuel and María Portolés. He would later describe his birthplace by saying that in Calanda, “the Middle Ages lasted until World War I.” The oldest of seven children, Luis had two brothers, Alfonso and Leonardo, and four sisters, Alicia, Concepción, Margarita and María. When Buñuel was just four months old, the family moved to Saragossa, where they were one of the wealthiest families in town. In Saragossa, Buñuel received a strict Jesuit education at the Colegio del Salvador from which he was later expelled. Buñuel finished the last two years of his high school education at the local public school.

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Catherine Deneuve (French IPA: , born 22 October 1943) is a French actress. She gained recognition for her portrayal of aloof, mysterious beauties in films such as Repulsion (1965) and Belle de jour (1967). Deneuve won two César Awards for her performances in The Last Metro (1980) and Indochine (1992), for which she was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1993. Considered one of France’s most successful actresses, she has appeared in only four American movies, most notably the 1983 cult classic The Hunger. In 2008, she appeared in her 100th film, Un conte de Noël. Deneuve was born Catherine Fabienne Dorléac in Paris, as the third of four daughters to French stage and screen actor Maurice Dorléac and actress Renée Deneuve. Deneuve was raised Catholic. Her three sisters are actress Françoise Dorléac (who died in a car crash on 26 June 1967), Sylvie Dorléac and Danielle Dorléac. Deneuve made her film debut with a small role in Les Collégiennes (1957). She subsequently appeared in several films including under director Roger Vadim, starting with Vice and Virtue (1963). The film that brought her to stardom was Jacques Demy’s 1964 musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, which led to additional prominent roles in Roman Polanski’s Repulsion (1965) and Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (1967). In the Polanski film, Deneuve first portrayed the character archetype for which she would be nicknamed the “ice maiden”, an emotionally distant and mysterious woman; her work for Buñuel would be her most famous. Deneuve remained active in European films throughout the 1960s and 70s, but limited her appearances in American movies of the period to The April Fools (1969) with Jack Lemmon and Hustle

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Nanpō Freight Line is a railway line in Nagoya Japan. Intended to increase capacity by connecting Nagoya Freight Terminal Station with Kasadera Station and Ōbu Station, work on it was suspended before completion. It was constructed not by the Japan Railway Construction Public Corporation, but by Japanese National Railways (JNR) itself. Between 1965 and 1975, JNR was transporting a large portion of the nation’s freight. In the Nagoya area, slow freight trains were interfering with passenger service, and as a result, a plan was sought to provide a separated line to carry freight traffic. As Sasajima Station, the city’s main freight terminal just south Nagoya Station, became too small, freight was to move south to a new site. The Nanpō Freight Line was built to bypass the Tōkaidō Main Line and serve these stations.

Excerpt: Hooton Park, on the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire, is an airfield originally built for the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 as a training aerodrome for pilots in World War I. During the early/mid 1930s, it was one of the two airfields (with Liverpool Speke) handling scheduled services for the Merseyside region. Hooton Park was home to No. 610 (County of Chester) Squadron and, post WW2, to No. 611 (West Lancashire) and No. 663 (AOP) Squadron. The aerodrome closed in 1957 after the disbandment of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, but the three pairs of Belfast Truss hangars, erected in 1917, survived the closure. The small remaining section of the airfield site is now owned and managed by The Hooton Park Trust. The hangars are also home to The Griffin Trust, 610 (County of Chester) Squadron Association, and an aircraft preservation society named The Aeroplane Collection. In 1070, William the Conqueror granted the lands of Hooton to Adam de Aldithly. Eventually they passed to the Stanley family through a series of marriages. After the Battle of Bosworth, Hooton had a new hall and the first Lord Derby in Lancashire. A second half-timbered hall was built in 1488. A third Italian-style hall was constructed circa 1778, but this later sold to cover the Stanley familys gambling debts in 1850. The hall was bought by a Mr. Naylor, a wealthy Liverpool banker, for 82,000 guineas. He spent a further 50,000 guineas on the addition of a 100 foot tower, an art gallery, and a large dining hall. He also built a racecourse, polo ground, heronry, stud farm and a church in Childer Thornton in memory of his first wife. His yacht was moored on the Mersey bu… More:

The first chapter of this thesis describes the motivation behind using room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) in gas sensor research and provides the reader with background knowledge of RTILs and a review of current applications of RTILs in various sensors.;The second chapter describes electrochemical polymerization of aniline in room temperature 1-butyl-3-methylimmidazolium (BMI) ionic liquids without addition of any acid. It is shown that the polymerization of aniline in BMI(BF 4) does require small but controlled amounts of water whereas the polymerization in BMI(PF6) and in BMI(TF2N) does not require any water addition. Differences in the cyclic voltammograms during polymerization of aniline are observed. In addition, all the synthesized polyaniline films show stable electroactivity in a wide potential range.;The third chapter describes the construction of reference electrodes for RTIL applications that have a known and reproducible potential versus the ferrocene/ferrocenium couple. They are based on reference electrodes of the first kind, Ag/Ag+ couple type, or of the second kind, based on Ag/AgCl in M+Cl-. The former uses AgNO3 salt and the latter tetrabutylammonium chloride, Bu 4N+Cl-, dissolved in acetonitrile which are then introduced to the ionic liquid of choice for a final concentration of 0.1M. The stability, reproducibility, and temperature behavior of the two reference systems have been characterized in the following ionic liquids: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BMI(BF4)], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [BMI(TF2N)], and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [BMI(PF6)].;The fourth chapter describes the electrochemical preparation and spectral analysis of gold clusters by adding gold atoms one-by-one (“bottom up” approach) through polyaniline’s ability to form a strong complex with chloroaurate at the protonated imine sites. It is contrasted with the “top down” approach in which the growth of

Excerpt: Knockloughrim or Knockcloghrim (from the Irish: Cnoc Clochdroma meaning “hill of the stony ridge”) is a small village near Maghera in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 186 people. It is predominantly Protestant, although there is a very small Roman Catholic population. It lies within the Magherafelt District Council area, more specifically within the Magherafelt Town District Electoral Area, and within the Mid Ulster constituency for both Westminster and Northern Ireland Assembly elections. Under the Boundary Commission’s proposals for local government reorganisation in 2011, the village would form part of the Castledawson ward of the proposed new Mid Ulster Council (comprising the current districts of Magherafelt, Cookstown and Dungannon and South Tyrone). Locally significant buildings include Termoneeny parish church (Church of Ireland), built in 1801 to replace another church at Mullagh, near Maghera; the present church is a listed building. The chimney and windmill south of Hillhead Road represent the local industrial heritage and are important local landmark features. The village is also noted for its well preserved stone walls, built in the late 1830s’ by John Bates, (1803-1855) a prominent Belfast solicitor who, on travelling through the area on his way to the azzizes in Londonderry, felt it would be a good site for a model village. Bates also served as Town Clerk of Belfast, apparently being a prominent member of the Tory machine which controlled the city after local government reforms of 1842. Rumour has it that he also embezzeled money from the Corporation to fund the building of the village, and when this was discovered, he absconded to France. However, he was apparently extradited, bu… More:
