Excerpt: The Université de Toulouse is a consortium of French universities, grandes écoles and other institutions of higher education and research, named after one of the earliest universities established in Europe in 1229, and including the successor universities to that earlier university. This article describes the institutions that have been called the “Université de Toulouse”. The formation of the University of Toulouse was imposed on Count Raymond VII as a part of the Treaty of Paris in 1229 ending the crusade against the Albigensians. As he was suspected of sympathizing with the heretics, Raymond VII had to finance the teaching of theology. Bishop Foulques de Toulouse was among the founders of the University. Among its first lecturers were: Jean de Garlande, Roland of Cremona. Other faculties (law, medicine) were added later. Initially, the University was located in the center of the city, together with the ancestors of student residences, the colleges. In 1969, the University of Toulouse split into three separate universities and numerous specialised institutions of higher education. The present-day Université de Toulouse (University of Toulouse) was founded on 27 March 2007. With more than 120,000 students, Toulouse is the second-largest university city in France (after Paris). The war ended with the Treaty of Westphalia. This revolt partly succeeded with the secession of seven provinces which formed the Dutch Republic. The direct cause of this war was similar to the slogan No taxation without representation. Under the Habsburgs, the low countries were formally named unceremoniously De landen van herwaarts over, and in French Les pays de par deça. Translated, this means “those lands around here” for the Dutch, and “those lands around there” for the French. While they were being taxed beyond what they were willing to pay, these far-away provinces were being continually admonished for seeing to their own business without permission from the throne, which at that time was indeed far away, in Spain. Each request for special permission would take at least four weeks for a response. This unrest over taxation without representation was amplified by a strong presence of Spanish troops brought in to oversee the order in these provinces. A parallel religious revolt caused by the spread of the Anabaptism of the Dutch reformer Menno Simons and the teachings of foreign Pr…

Excerpt: Cornwall Iron Furnace – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Cornwall Iron Furnace was one of many ironworks that were built in Pennsylvania over a sixty-year period, from 1716-1776. There were at least 21 blast furnaces, 45 forges, four bloomeries, six steel furnaces, three slitting mills, two plate mills, and one wire mill in operation in Colonial Pennsylvania. The furnaces at Cornwall Furnace went through two stages of technology. Peter Grubb was born in Delaware about 1702 and settled in what is now Lebanon County in 1734. He bought about 300 acres (1.2 km) of magnetite rich land. Grubb also noticed that his land had the other natural resources needed to produce iron. Namely, vast stands of timber for the production of charcoal, running water to operate the bellows, and an ample supply of limestone needed to add flux to the smelting furnaces. Grubb’s plans were further helped by the fact that the magnetite at Cornwall was either very close to or on the surface of his land. He was ready to venture into the iron business and set about the task of building an iron “plantation”. These centers of iron production were usually located well away from the heavily cleared farmlands and were nestled in the Ridge and Valley section of Pennsylvania. Grubb constructed his furnaces, first a bloomery and later the more modern blast furnace and the support buildings and mill village that was needed to house his workers. He named his operation Cornwall because his father, John Grubb had come from Cornwall, UK in 1677. Cornwall Iron Furnace was an excellent fit for the agricultural based economy of the Thirteen Colonies. Iron was needed to make into tools, nails and weapons. The official policy of Great Britain frowned on manufacturing in the colonies, but Eng… More:

Excerpt: Persian Letters (Lettres persanes, written 1721) is a satirical work by Charles de Secondat, baron de Montesquieu, recounting the experiences of two Persian noblemen, Usbek and Rica, who are traveling through France. In 1711 Usbek leaves his seraglio in Isfahan to undertake the long journey to France, accompanied by his young friend Rica. He leaves behind five wives (Zachi, Zéphis, Fatmé, Zélis, and Roxane) in the care of a number of black eunuchs, one of whom is the head or first eunuch. During the trip and their long stay in Paris (1712-1720), they comment, in letters exchanged with friends and mullahs, on numerous aspects of Western, Christian society, particularly French politics and mores, ending with a biting satire of the System of John Law. Over time, various disorders surface back in the seraglio, and beginning in 1717 (Letter 139 ), the situation there rapidly unravels. Usbek orders his head eunuch to crack down, but his message does not arrive in time and a revolt brings about the death of his wives, including the vengeful suicide of his favorite, Roxane, and, it appears, most of the eunuchs. The chronology breaks down as follows: The novel consisting of 150 letters appeared in May 1721 under the rubric Cologne: Pierre Marteau, a front for the Amsterdam publisher Jacques Desbordes whose business is now run by his widow, Susanne de Caux. Called edition A, this is the text utilized in the recent critical edition of Lettres persanes for the complete works of Montesquieu published by the Voltaire Foundation in 2004. Excerpt: Allentown, Pennsylvania – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The area that is today the center of Allentown was laid out as Northampton Town in 1762 by William Allen, a wealthy shipping merchant, former mayor of the city of Philadelphia and then-Chief Justice of the Province of Pennsylvania. The property was part of a 5,000-acre (20 km) plot Allen purchased on September 10, 1735 from his business partner Joseph Turner, who was assigned the warrant to the land by Thomas Penn, son of William Penn, on May 18, 1732. The tract was originally surveyed on November 23, 1736. A subsequent survey done in 1753 by David Schultz for a road from Easton to Reading, of which present-day Union and Jackson streets were links, shows the location of log house owned by Allen, situated near the western bank of the Jordan Creek, which was believed to have been built around 1740. Used primarily as a hunting and fishing lodge, here Allen entertained prominent guests including his brother-in-law, James Hamilton, and colonial governor John Penn. The original plan for the town, now in the archives of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, comprised forty-two city blocks and consisted of 756 lots, mostly 60 feet (18 m) in width and 230 feet (70 m) in depth. The town was located between present-day Fourth and Tenth Streets, and Union and Liberty Streets. Many streets on the original plan were named for Allen’s children: Margaret (present-day Fifth Street), William (now Sixth), James (now Eighth), Ann (now Ninth) and John (now Walnut). Allen Street (now Seventh) was named for Allen himself, and was the main thoroughfare. Hamilton Street was named for James Hamilton. Gordon Street was named for Sir Patrick Gordon, Deputy Governor of Colonial Pennsylvania from 1726-1736. Chew… More:

Excerpt: In 1752, Henry Fielding started a “paper war”, a long term dispute with constant publication of pamphlets attacking other writers, between the various authors on London’s Grub Street. Although it began as a dispute between Fielding and John Hill, other authors, such as Christopher Smart, Bonnell Thornton, William Kenrick, Arthur Murphy, and Tobias Smollet were soon dedicating their works to aid various sides of the conflict. The dispute lasted until 1753 and involved many of London’s periodicals. It eventually resulted in countless essays, poems, and even a series of mock epic poems starting with Smart’s The Hilliad. Although it is unknown what actually started the dispute, it resulted in a divide of authors who either supported Fielding or supported Hill, and few in between. Fielding started a “paper war” in the first issue of The Covent-Garden Journal (4 January 1752) by declaring war against “hack writers”. In response, John Hill claimed in the London Daily Advertiser (9 January 1752) Fielding had met with him prior to January and proposed what would be a fake paper war that would involve London writers “giving Blows that would not hurt, and sharing the Advantage in Silence.” Such a meeting between Fielding and Hill to discuss the proposed war is believed to have occurred (if it occurred) on 28 December 1751. It is known that Hill met Fielding for legal business between 26 December and 28 December 1751 after Hill was robbed. Before Hill had revealed this information, he attacked Fielding’s Amelia in the London Daily Advertiser on 8 January 1752. The book’s title character, Amelia, was involved in an accident that damaged her face, and Hill, mocking the way Fielding described the scene, claimed that she “could charm the World without the … More:

Excerpt: Lessee of Fothergill v. Fothergill , 1 U.S. 6 (1763) is a decision of the Pennsylvania Provincial Supreme Court , issued when Pennsylvania was still an English colony. It is among the first decisions that appear in the first volume of United States Reports .Colonial and Early State Court Cases in the United States Reports None of the decisions appearing in the first volume and most of the second volume of the United States Reports are actually decisions of the United States Supreme Court . Instead, they are decisions from various Pennsylvania courts, dating from the colonial period and the first decade after Independence. Alexander Dallas , a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania lawyer and journalist, had been in the business of reporting these cases for newspapers and periodicals. He subsequently began compiling his case reports in a bound volume, which he called “Reports of cases ruled and adjudged in the courts of Pennsylvania, before and since the Revolution”. This would come to be known as the first volume of “Dallas Reports.”When the United States Supreme Court, along with the rest of the new Federal Government, moved in 1791 to the nations temporary capital in Philadelphia, Dallas was appointed the Supreme Courts first unofficial and unpaid Supreme Court Reporter . (Court reporters in that age received no salary, but were expected to profit from the publication and sale of their compiled decisions.) Dallas continued to collect and publish Pennsylvania decisions in a second volume of his Reports, and when the Supreme Court began hearing cases, he added those cases to his reports, starting towards the end of the second volume, “2 Dallas Reports”. Dallas would go on to publish a total of 4 volumes of decisions during his tenure as Reporter. In 1874, the U.S. government created the

Excerpt: The Carlisle Peace Commission was a group of British negotiators who were sent, in 1778, during the American Revolutionary War, with a belated offer of self-rule, within the British empire. After the British defeat at Saratoga, and fearful of French recognition of American independence, the Prime Minister, Lord North, had Parliament repeal such offensive measures as the Tea Act, and the Massachusetts Government Act, and sent a commission to seek a negotiated settlement with the Continental Congress. Scholars agree that had the terms been offered in 1775, then war would have been avoided. However, the King or Parliament were too proud to make the offer, until too late. Thomas Pownall had proposed self-rule, (which later became Commonwealth status), for America for a decade; finally Lord North acceded to a commission in 1778. Finally, the British government changed the policy of dealing with individual colonies, to deal with the Continental Congress. William Eden organized the commission, headed by the Earl of Carlisle, along with George Johnstone who had previously served as Governor of West Florida. Richard Jackson declined to serve after the Alliance treaty with France became known. The commissioners set out in April, although they knew that the Franco-American alliance had already been formed. Walpole remarked Carlisle was: very fit to make a treaty that will not be made; was totally unacquainted with business and though not void of ambition, had but moderate parts and less application. They sent a package of proposals, from Philadelphia to the Continental Congress in York, Pennsylvania, June 13, 1778. Congress replied insisting on American independence. Eden was upset, that he wasn’t told of the orders to the Army to relocate to New York…. More:

Excerpt: Calvary Cemetery in Queens (Manhattan skyline in background) was one of the first new cemeteries established after passage of the Rural Cemetery Act.The Rural Cemetery Act was a law passed by the New York Legislature on April 27, 1847, that authorized commercial burial grounds in rural New York state . The law led to burial of human remains becoming a commercial business for the first time, replacing the traditional practice of burying the dead in churchyards and on private farmland . One effect of the law was the development of a large concentration of cemeteries along the border between the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. The law’s enactment came during an era when a burgeoning urban population was crowding out Manhattan churchyards traditionally used for burials and the concept of the rural cemetery on the outskirts of a city was becoming stylish.Provisions and effects of the law The law authorized nonprofit entities to establish cemeteries on rural land and sell burial plots, and it exempted from property taxation land that was so used. A few rural cemeteries had been established in New York before the new law was passed (including Green-Wood Cemetery in 1838 and Albany Rural Cemetery in 1844), but the law’s passage soon led to the establishment of more new cemeteries near Manhattan, particularly in western Queens . Both churches and land speculators responded to the new law by purchasing rural land for cemeteries. The move to

Excerpt: The Anchor Line was a steamboat company that operated a fleet of boats on the Mississippi River between St. Louis, Missouri , and New Orleans, Louisiana , between 1859 and 1898, when it went out of business. It was one of the most well-known, if not successful, pools of steamboats formed on the lower Mississippi River in the decades following the American Civil War .History Early years, 1859-1879 The company was founded in 1859 as the “Memphis and St. Louis Packet Line ,” principally providing service to these two cities and points in between. Two years after the line was founded, the American Civil War broke out. Whereas many steamboat owners were forced to cease operations at the outbreak of hostilities, the Memphis and St. Louis Packet Line managed to remain in business by operating on the parts of the Mississippi River occupied by the Union forces. By the spring of 1862, this included all parts of the River as far south as Memphis. One year later, all ports on the river except for Vicksburg, Mississippi , and Port Hudson, Louisiana , were under Federal control. On 4 July 1863, Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant forced the Confederate garrison commanded by John C. Pemberton to surrender Vicksburg, and the next day, Port Hudson surrendered, leaving the river open to commercial steamboat traffic. In 1874, the company adopted the giant anchor as its symbol (and presumably changed its name at that date). In any case, by the mid-1870s it was known as the “Anchor Line.” The anchor was prominently hung between the two tall smokestacks on each of its boats. It was also included as a logo on the furnishings of many of its boats, including the chairs manufactured for the boats’ cabins. The golden era, 1880-1894 By the early 1880s, the company had acquired sufficient capital to

Although Republican pro-business practices led to the loss of several districts in pro-labor regions, the burgeoning economy helped Republicans to remain in power. The most pressing national matters at the time were fragmented, generally related to government’s relationship to business or to providing social aid. However, no predominant issue was able to cast a shadow over the election. The small, populist Farmer-Labor Party also held

Excerpt: Face the Music Face the Music is a musical , the first collaboration between Moss Hart (book) and Irving Berlin (music and lyrics). Face the Music opened on Broadway in 1932, and has had several subsequent regional and New York stagings. The popular song “Let’s Have Another Cup of Coffee ” was introduced in the musical.History The musical was written as a political satire, specifically spoofing political and police corruption that the Seabury Commission was investigating. It also satirized show business, showing the far-fetched economies, such as seeing 4 films with a room and bath for 10¢. The musical did not ignore the Depression but rather found humor in it. There were many titles considered, among them Nickels and Dimes , but Berlin came up with the final title. Synopsis Producer Hal Reisman desperately seeks backers for his Broadway show. Because of the Great Depression , once-rich investors are “Lunching at the Automat”. Kit Baker, a former musical-comedy star and her boyfriend Pat Mason are now out of work and poor (“Let’s Have Another Cup of Coffee”). In his search, Reisman meets crooked policemen who need to get rid of their illegal money before they are found out. The corrupt police chief Martin van Buren Meshbesher and his eccentric wife Myrtle become investors in the show, expecting it to be a failure. In the show-within-the-show, Rodney St. Clair sings “My Beautiful Rhinestone Girl”. However, when risqué material is

Excerpt: The Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) was Adolf Hitler’s personal Bodyguard Regiment (“Leibstandarte” being a somewhat archaic German expression for the personal bodyguard of a military leader). The LSSAH independently participated in combat during the Invasion of Poland. The LSSAH was amalgamated into the Waffen-SS together with the SS-VT and the combat units of the SS-TV prior to Operation Barbarossa in 1941. By the end of World War II it had been increased in size from a regiment to a Panzer division. The elite division was a component of the Waffen-SS which was found guilty of war crimes in the Nuremberg Trials. In the earliest days of the NSDAP, it was realized by the leaders that bodyguard units composed of trustworthy and loyal men would be a wise development. Ernst Röhm formed a guard formation from the 19.Granatwerfer-Kompanie, and from this formation the Sturmabteilung (SA) soon evolved. Adolf Hitler, realizing the potential threat that the SA had presented, in early 1923 ordered the formation of a… More:

Excerpt: Alias the Spider Alias the Spider was a fairly obscure comic book feature from the Golden Age of Comic Books that appeared in Crack Comics for nearly three years (starting with issue #1 in 1940). He was created by Golden Age great Paul Gustavson , and the book was published by Quality Comics . The original, Golden Age version of the character is currently in public domain, but the rights to all subsequent versions are owned by DC Comics . Fictional character biography Golden Age The Spider was, in reality, playboy Tom Hallaway . Hallaway had tired of seeing criminals have their own way harassing and murdering honest citizens, so he adopted the guise of The Spider to settle the score. The Spider fought crime in a yellow shirt and blue shorts. He was armed with a fairly ordinary bow and arrows, a special car known as The Black Widow, and the assistance of his valet Chuck (who helped out Hallaway in both of his identities without anyone making any sort of connection). He also had a special arrow he called the “Spider’s Seal”, which had a flat disc on the end he shot at thugs’ hands to disarm them. Only one adventure of the Spider has ever been reprinted by DC Comics (which acquired the Quality Comics stable of characters when the company went out of business in 1956), the story from Crack Comics #25, which saw print in Detective Comics #441. The Spider later showed up a few times in the pages of All-Star

Excerpt: London Bridge is a bridge between the City of London and Southwark in London, U.K., over the River Thames. Situated between Cannon Street Railway Bridge and Tower Bridge, it forms the western end of the Pool of London. On the south side of the bridge are Southwark Cathedral and London Bridge station; on the north side are the Monument to the Great Fire of London and Monument tube station. It was the only bridge over the Thames downstream from Kingston until Putney Bridge opened in 1729. The current bridge opened on 17 March 1973 and is the latest in a succession of bridges to occupy the spot and claim the name. The bridge carries part of the A3 road, which is maintained by the Greater London Authority; the bridge itself is owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates (see City Bridge Trust), an independent charity overseen by the City of London Corporation. The area between London Bridge and Tower Bridge on the south side of the Thames is a business improvement district (BID) and is managed by Team London Bridge. The name London Bridge is often mistakenly applied to Tower Bridge, which is the next bridge downstream. A bridge has existed at or near the present site over the period from the Roman occupation of the area, nearly 2,000 years ago. The first bridge across the Thames in the London area, probably a military pontoon bridge, was built of wood by the Romans on the present site around 50 AD. Around 55 AD, a piled bridge was constructed, and the local Britons built a small trading settlement next to itthe town of Londinium. The settlement and the bridge were destroyed in a revolt led by Quee…

The two latest additions to the 20 Questions series break the subject of “eBaying” down into two distinct books for two distinct audiences: eBay buyers and eBay sellers. And if readers were to buy both books, they’d have the complete information on how eBay works and how they could make it work for them.20 Questions To Ask Before Selling on eBay is designed to take anyone through the steps to sell successfully and profitably. Beginning with how to set up an eBay business and organizing it for success, the book proceeds through how to choose the best products, how to design an attractive and effective listing, getting paid, automating auctions, customer service, and more. Both 20 Questions eBay books take readers step-by-step through the process, each chapter building on the information taught. The books are written as a fresh and lively narrative, with plenty of bullets, checklists and useful advice learned from the authors’ experiences. It’s all the information both buyers and sellers need to not only get started, but to do eBay their way! About the Author:Lissa McGrath has worked as the assistant to Skip McGrath, for over four years and is involved in all aspects of the transaction. When Skip is on vacation, Lissa keeps the auctions going and runs the business in his absence. Only one adventure of the Spider has ever been reprinted by DC Comics (which acquired the Quality Comics stable of characters when the company went out of business in 1956), the

Excerpt: Ansel Easton Adams Ansel Easton Adams (February 20, 1902 April 22, 1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist , best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West , especially in Yosemite National Park . One of his most famous photographs was Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California. With Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System as a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs and the work of those he taught the system. Adams primarily used large-format cameras, despite their size, weight, setup time, and film cost, because their high resolution helped ensure sharpness in his images. Adams founded the Group f/64 along with fellow photographers Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham , which in turn created the Museum of Modern Art ‘s department of photography. Adams’s timeless and visually stunning photographs are reproduced on calendars, posters, and in books, making his photographs widely recognizable. Life Childhood Adams was born in the Western Addition of San Francisco, California , to distinctly upper-class parents Charles Hitchcock Adams and Olive Bray Adams. He was an only child and was named after his uncle Ansel Easton. The Adams family came from New England, having migrated from the north of Ireland in the early 1700s. His grandfather founded and built a prosperous lumber business, which his father later ran, though his father s natural talents

In the early 20th century, Drankov owned a dancing school in Sevastopol , which fed all of his family. Later on, he took interest in photography and soon became a professional in this craft. Drankov moved to Saint Petersburg , where he would earn fame for his photographic talent and be awarded the title of the Purveyor of the Royal Court of His Imperial Highness for his quality photographs of Nicholas II . Also, Drankov managed to make photographic work much cheaper and open a chain of no less than 50 studios, where they took photos under amplified electric lighting, thus reducing the cost of the whole photographing process. Subsequently, Drankov became a press photographer for The Times and Parisian L’Illustration and obtained a journalist accreditation at the State Duma . Film industry career In 1907, Alexander Drankov decided to start his own film-making business and opened “A. Drankov’s Atelier”

In response, Bush announced a global War on Terrorism, ordered an invasion of Afghanistan that same year and an invasion of Iraq in 2003. In addition to national security issues, Bush promoted policies on the economy, health care, education, and social security reform. He signed into law broad tax cuts, the No Child Left Behind Act, the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, and Medicare prescription drug benefits for seniors. His tenure saw national debates on immigration and Social Security. Bush successfully ran for re-election against Democratic Senator John Kerry in 200… More:

Excerpt: 2D computer graphics is the computer -based generation of digital images mostly from two-dimensional models (such as 2D geometric models, text, and digital images) and by techniques specific to them. The word may stand for the branch of computer science that comprises such techniques, or for the models themselves.Raster graphic sprites (left) and masks (right)2D computer graphics are mainly used in applications that were originally developed upon traditional printing and drawing technologies, such as typography , cartography , technical drawing , advertising , etc.. In those applications, the two-dimensional image is not just a representation of a real-world object, but an independent artifact with added semantic value; two-dimensional models are therefore preferred, because they give more direct control of the image than 3D computer graphics (whose approach is more akin to photography than to typography ).In many domains, such as desktop publishing , engineering , and business , a description of a document based on 2D computer graphics techniques can be much smaller than the corresponding digital image often by a factor of 1/1000 or more. This representation is also more flexible since it can be rendered at different resolutions to suit different output devices . For these reasons, documents and illustrations are often stored or transmitted as 2D graphic files.2D computer graphics started in the 1950s, based on vector graphics devices . These were largely supplanted by

Located on the right bank of the River Seine , the 2nd arrondissement, together with the adjacent 8th and 9th arrondissements, hosts an important business district, centred on the Paris Opéra , which houses the city’s most dense concentration of business activities. The arondissement contains the former Paris Bourse (stock exchange ) and a large number of banking headquarters, as well as a textile district, known as the Sentier, and the Opéra-Comique concert hall. The 2nd arrondissment is also the home of all of Paris’s surviving 19th-century glazed commercial arcades. At the beginning of the 19th century most of the streets of Paris were dark and muddy and lacked sidewalks . A few entrepreneurs copied the success of the Passage des Panoramas and its well-lit, dry and paved pedestrian passageways. By the middle of the 19th century there were about two dozen of these commercial malls, but most of them disappeared as the Paris authorities paved the main

3 Ways To Start Your Own Highly Profitable Coaching Program(Hint: With Method #1, You Can Start TODAY!)Dear Internet Marketer,Perhaps the most significant business decision I’ve made since starting online in 1999 is to offer a coaching program. It has, literally, doubled and even tripled my income.A simple look at the numbers explains why it is so important…It takes 50 customers buying a $20 ebook to earn $1,000. It takes only 1 customer buying a $1,000 coaching program. You can make a lot more money with a lot less effort by simply offering something with a greater price tag … in this case, your own coaching program. It just takes fewer transactions to reach a significant profit level. And, when you factor in the fact that many customers WANT to spend more money for something limited in nature, for something that provides a level of access, it because paramount that you offer it.Years ago I heard a speaker (sorry, can’t remember who it was) talk about high-dollar coffee grinders sold at Starbucks®. His point was clear: while not everyone buys the grinders, when one is sold it significantly increases profit. You gotta sell a lot of cappuccinos and lattes to equal the same profit from a grinder. It was at that moment that I started working on (and eventually launched) my own Six-Figure Formula™ coaching program. I still offer it about 3-4 times per year and it brings in close to $100,000 just by itself.I tell you all that not because you’re interested in me and what I’ve done, but because you’re interested in you and what you can do. Quite simply: If you’re willing to invest just ten dollars, I’ll explain some things that I’ve done – which you can do – to launch a successful coaching program. I’ve put together a short, 13-page report entitled “3 Ways To Start Your Own Highly
