AN ASSESSMENT MODEL FOR WEB-BASED INFORMATION SYSTEM EFFECTIVENESS $60 Information System (IS) effectiveness assessment is an important issue for the organizations as IS have become critical for their survival. With the incorporation of Internet technologies into the business environment, it is now more difficult to measure IS effectiveness, because Internet provides a borderless, non-stop, flexible communication medium. Assessing the effectiveness of web-based information systems (WIS) is vital for survival and competitive advantage which is a complicated subject since there are several interacting factors to consider. In the literature there are several methods proposed for IS assessment. However, those studies have been far from providing a broad, comprehensive evaluation framework for any type of web-based IS independent of its domain. In this book, a generic WIS effectiveness assessment framework is proposed. The framework is applied in case studies consisting of four organizations in e-commerce and e-banking domains. |

Amazon.Com $19.99 Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) is an American-based multinational electronic commerce company. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, it is America’s largest online retailer, with nearly three times the Internet sales revenue of the runner up, Staples, Inc., as of January 2010. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.com, Inc. in 1994 and launched it online in 1995 as Cadabra.com. It started as an online bookstore, but soon diversified, selling DVDs, CDs, MP3 downloads, computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, and toys. Amazon has established separate websites in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, and China. It also provides international shipping to certain countries for some of its products. A 2009 survey found that Amazon was the UK’s favorite music and video retailer, and third overall retailer. Amazon was founded in 1994, spurred by what Bezos called “regret minimization framework”, his effort to fend off regret for not staking a claim in the Internet gold rush. Company lore says Bezos wrote the business plan while he and his wife drove from New York to Seattle,, although that account appears to be apocryphal. The company began as an online bookstore; while the largest brick-and-mortar bookstores and mail-order catalogs for books might offer 200,000 titles, an online bookstore could offer more. Bezos named the company “Amazon” after the world’s largest river. Since 2000, Amazon’s logotype is an arrow leading from A to Z, representing customer satisfaction (as it forms a smile); a goal was to have every product in the alphabet. Amazon was incorporated in 1994, in the state of Washington. In July 1995, the company began service and sold its first book on amazon.com – Douglas Hofstadter’s Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought.. In 1996, it was reincorporated in Delaware. Amazon issued its |

Breaking Windows: How Bill Gates Fumbled the Future of Microsoft $0.99 The year is 1997, and despite the machinations of its rivals, Microsoft is master of the digital universe and the darling of corporate America. Windows and Office generate staggering profits, the company’s share price is stratospheric, and Bill Gates is the preeminent icon of the information age. No outsider could guess what Gates knew — that the most powerful threat to Microsoft’s prized Windows platform came not from Sun or Netscape or AOL or even from the U.S. Department of Justice, but from within the company’s own ranks. Breaking Windows tells the story of the battle for the soul of Microsoft that raged inside the company from 1997 to 2000 and continues to reverberate today. Drawing on hundreds of e-mails among Microsoft executives, trial testimony, and exclusive interviews with Gates and his chief lieutenants, Wall Street Journal reporter David Bank reveals the bitter maneuvering between what he calls Microsoft’s “Windows hawks” and its “Internet doves.” On one side were the fierce defenders of the hegemony of Windows, on the other those who championed a new way of doing business based on the Internet’s “open standards.” The reformers wanted to break free from the legacy of Windows and dare to compete on the merits of their software. At the center of this pitched battle stood Gates, the tactical genius who had created the company in his own image and who now accepts full responsibility for his fateful choices. “Every mistake you can lay at my feet,” he told Bank, who takes him at his word — offering the first critique of Gates’s leadership not from the perspective of government prosecutors or envious software rivals but from inside the company itself. Ambitious in scope and surprising in its conclusions, Breaking Windows contains sharply drawn portraits of key past and present executives, including Steve Ballmer, Jim Allchin, Brad Silverberg, Adam Bosworth, and Paul Maritz. Bank argues persuasively that the |

Bringing the Internet to School: Lessons from an Urban District $0.99 “Provides essential insights into the incompatibilities between the Internet and school business-as-usual and a vivid depiction of the effects-many of them unintended and unanticipated-of providing Internet access within classrooms.” —Barbara Means, director, Center for Technology in Learning, SRI InternationalThe Internet is moving into schools at an extraordinary rate, but what happens when high-technology meets the low-tech world of education? As Bringing the Internet to School shows, there is enormous variance in the way the Internet is used in educational settings and the effect it has on students, teachers, and administrators. Bringing the Internet to School presents the results of one of the first comprehensive studies of Internet-implementation in K-12 schools. Based on the information gleaned from this groundbreaking study, two experts in the field of high-technology and schools, Janet Ward Schofield and Ann Locke Davidson, examine the myriad issues that arise when the Internet is introduced into the classroom. This important book reveals the positive and negative consequences that Internet use has on classroom equity, academics, and social life. For example, while Internet access often changes student-teacher roles and relationships in positive ways and gives students new, exciting, and useful source for information and feedback, it also provides students with a tempting distraction from their studies and can exacerbate inequities in the classroom. Throughout the book, the authors illuminate the ways in which the existing culture and structure of schools shape Internet use, the ways students’ and teachers’ experiences are affected by it, and the technical and systemic challenges involved in bringing the Internet to schools. Based on research sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Spencer Foundation, the information in Bringing the Internet to School was drawn from a five-year study that includes |

Broadband Internet Deployment in Japan $91 Japan is well-known as the country where the penetration ratio of the intelligent cellular phone system is large. In 2007, it was reported that in the cellular phone system in Japan, the total volume of data traffic became larger than that of voice traffic. Now, the telecommunication infrastructure is going to be converged with broadcasting infrastructure. 2011 is called as the first year of the full digital age. Towards 2011, the following technical challenges may arise: development and deployment of end-to-end architecture on the existing complex IPv4-based Internet; development of Japanese infrastructure, which is globally competitive and globally interoperable; development of new applications and new business models in the ubiquitous networking environment; development of Internet systems as a social infrastructure; integration with the real-space (i.e. integration of physical space and cyber space); NGN (Next Generation Network) and FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence); and development and deployment of the unwired Internet environment. In order to progress the actions listed above, we must establish strong collaboration among industry and academia. This volume looks into the challenges and opportunities. |

Business value of information sharing and the role of emerging technologies. $49.99 Information Technology has brought significant benefits to organizations by allowing greater information sharing within and across firm boundaries leading to performance improvements. Emerging technologies such as Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web2.0 have transformed the volume and process of information sharing. However, a comprehensive understanding of how information sharing beyond firm boundaries results in business value is still lacking. This dissertation explores the business value of information sharing beyond firm boundaries and the role of emerging technologies in driving the business value. The dissertation consists of three related parts. The first part builds a taxonomy and research model of business value of information sharing beyond firm boundaries. This provides a broad framework for studying the phenomenon and identifies research gaps. Two empirical studies then follow to address two of these research gaps. The first empirical study is a cross-sectional analysis that looks at information sharing with suppliers and the impact of SOA in moderating the impact of transparency and complexity of information sharing processes on supply chain efficiency as measured by inventory and accounts payable. Results show that SOA use mitigates the negative impact of complexity of information sharing process on supply chain performance. However, SOA use also reduces the positive impact of information sharing transparency. The second empirical study is a longitudinal analysis that considers an Internet based peer to peer financial market and the decision making by market participants based on shared information. The results show that the group decision making has significant error compared to an efficient benchmark. The quality of decision making improves with time as a result of learning and with increase in information availability. The study shows that improvement in quality of decision making follows a punctuated equilibrium model. This dissertation |

Centralized Computing: Cloud Computing, Desktop Virtualization, Decentralized Computing, Workspace Virtualization, Network Level Authentication $10.09 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Cloud Computing, Desktop Virtualization, Decentralized Computing, Workspace Virtualization, Network Level Authentication, Vmware View. Excerpt: Cloud computing is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software and information are provided to computers and other devices on-demand, like the electricity grid. It is a paradigm shift following the shift from mainframe to clientserver that preceded it in the early 1980s. Details are abstracted from the users who no longer have need of expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure “in the cloud” that supports them. Cloud computing describes a new supplement, consumption and delivery model for IT services based on the Internet, and it typically involves the provision of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources as a service over the Internet. It is a byproduct and consequence of the ease-of-access to remote computing sites provided by the Internet. The term “cloud” is used as a metaphor for the Internet, based on the cloud drawing used in the past to represent the telephone network, and later to depict the Internet in computer network diagrams as an abstraction of the underlying infrastructure it represents. Typical cloud computing providers deliver common business applications online which are accessed from another web service or software like a web browser, while the software and data are stored on servers. Most cloud computing infrastructure consists of reliable services delivered through data centers and built on servers. Clouds often appear as single points of access for all consumers’ computing needs. Commercial offerings are generally expected to meet quality of service (QoS) requirements of customers and typically offer SLAs. The major cloud vendors i… More: |

Wikipedia was launched in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger and is currently the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet. Although the policies of the Wikipedia strongly espouse verifiability and a neutral point of view, critics of Wikipedia accuse it of systemic bias and inconsistencies (including undue weight given to popular culture), and allege that it favors consensus over credentials in its editorial process. Its reliability and accuracy are also targeted. Other criticisms center on its susceptibility to vandalism and the addition of spurious or unverified information, though scholarly work suggests that vandalism is generally short-lived, and an investigation in Nature found that the material they compared came close to the level of accuracy of Encyclopædia Britannica and had a similar rate of “serious errors”. Wikipedia’s departure from the expert-driven style of the encyclopedia building mode and the large presence of unacademic content have been noted several … More: |

Comcast Digital Voice $95.99 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Comcast Digital Voice (CDV) is a telephone product offered by Comcast Corporation. Comcast offers CDV in both residential and Business Class. It is similar to VoIP, but differs in that it operates on a dedicated server and assigns priority to the information sent over the CDV network, and also means that the information is not transmitted over the public Internet. On the HFC (cable) network, calls are placed into individual Unsolicited Grant Service (UGS) flows, based on DOCSIS 1.1 QoS standards. It utilizes E911, rather than the standard 911 service utilized by other large VoIP carriers. This allows the 911 service to immediately know where a caller is located, regardless of whether or not they are able to vocally relate their location to the operator. On July 16, 2008 Comcast officially reported that CDV had crossed the 5 million customer mark in less than a year. |

Customer Loyalty In E-Retailing $71.97 Despite the increasing popularity of online shopping, little is known about consumer behaviour and attitudes towards e-retailers, particularly how customer loyalty is developed and maintained among online shoppers. This study examines the concept of e-loyalty and its manifestation within an e-retailing context. Also considered are the antecedents of e-loyalty and their relationships within this environment. Based on an extensive review of the extant literature, a conceptual model is developed and subsequently tested on a sample of customers from four Web-based retailers. Results indicate that e-loyalty is a multi-dimensional construct which manifests itself in several ways, some of which may not be readily observable, and is driven by numerous predictors via a complex network of inter-relationships. The findings offer significant insights into consumer perceptions and behaviour within this context, thus having important implications for both business practitioners and academics, particularly those with an interest in emerging Internet-enabled consumer markets. |

DESIGN OF A CYBER SECURITY LABORATORY $74.11 The use of internet in Indonesia is increasing rapidly. More than thirty million people in Indonesia use internet as a media for business, education, entertainment, and other social interactions. The misuse of internet, as known as cyber crime, also increases. There are sort of events that trigger the occurrence of cyber crime. Based on that situation, the government has formed a national CSIRT called ID-SIRTII (Indonesia Security Incident Response Team on Internet Infrastructure) in 2007 to invigilate the network security based on internet protocol. The missions of ID-SIRTII are to control, to prevent, and to help the enforcement of law if the cyber crime happened. ID-SIRTII, as an institution that control and prevent cyber crime should have several research laboratories such as Digital Forensics Laboratory, Malware Analysis Laboratory, and Hacking Laboratory. This thesis is purposeful to help ID-SIRTII in designing the Digital Forensics Laboratory. |

Destroying Adwords $1.99 Description:Headline: “Adwords provides one of the quickest routes to ridiculous success in marketing. You have to know how to get your clicks very cheaply, how to target winning keywords and how to ensure you make a decent return on your investment. When you can do this, you can simply turn-up the volume! Buy more clicks and generate more profit!”AdWords and Your BusinessAdwords or Pay-per-Click (PPC) advertising is, essentially, the 21st century equivalent of direct marketing, allowing advertisers to test ideas in hours rather than months; and it can be done very effectively for a few hundred dollars and certainly considerably less than thousands. The big advantage of this approach is that you can save yourself a lot of money in the long run and take away the majority of the risk involved with starting a new business. You see, as a new entrepreneur, before the internet became so widespread, you would start up a business based on an idea you hoped would be appealing to customers. Unless you had a lot of financial backing there was no way you could research whether or not your new business idea was profitable or not. It would require employing a market research firm and spending tens of thousands of dollars on investigating the market. Most entrepreneurs dont have access to that kind of money and even if they did, they might feel it would be spent better elsewhere such as on product or service development, marketing or other areas; and certainly not on simply researching the idea. However, with PPC mechanisms, including AdWords, small business owners can now simply offer online visitors an idea and immediately test their response to it to determine whether or not it will profitable. The advantage is that this can be done with very little expenditure and it can be done in a short time span rather than having to wait for months or weeks. Essentially, you are asking the market what they want and they are answering you in |

They describe proven strategies for profiting from the revolution created by e-markets, e-hubs, and portals. Enabling Application Composition for Enterprise JavaBeans $73 Since the introduction of Sun Microsystems’ Java-based server-side components called Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs), server-side application development is becoming increasingly simpler as various EJB based components are assembled. With an increased demand and rapidly growing market for EJB-based components, many vendors are introducing specialized EJB components to handle various types of business functions. With larger numbers of EJB components, the complexity of their effective use is also increasing. Application assemblers wishing to use a mix of vendor-delivered and in-house developed EJBs need effective methods and tools to perform their tasks quickly and easily. With the growth of Internet-based web applications, time-to-market is critical. Corporations must put together a web-front in just weeks. Current methodologies available to connect or assemble EJBs have limited capabilities and some shortcomings. This thesis focuses on investigating currently available methodologies, comparing their advantages and disadvantages, researching new methodologies, and recommending a specific methodology. |

Essentials of Business Statistics $156.25 Bowerman and O’Connell’s, Essentials of Business Statistics (EBS) delivers clear and understandable explanations of business statistics concepts through the use of case studies and examples. The non-calculus-based approach thoroughly covers descriptive and inferential statistics with an emphasis on business applications. Both procedural and conceptual aspects of the subject are covered, analysis and interpretation are emphasized, and shows students how to select the appropriate statistical tool for use in a particular business application. The abundant examples reflect real applications of statistics relevant to business students. A key distinction of EBS is the rich and realistic continuing case study examples that provide the architecture of the text. Unlike virtually all other texts, which use discreet examples for each individual subject area, EBS relies on these continuing examples to “frame” the study of statistics and place it squarely into the realm of real business problems and scenarios. Part and parcel with this approach are the rich and relevant data sets used to demonstrate statistical concepts. Finally, Bowerman and O’Connell also provide a fresh technology perspective. Excel and Minitab output is included in the text to help students visualize concepts, and a robust Excel add-in package, Megastat is both available on the accompanying CD ROM and has been thoroughly integrated into the text. The coverage of the Internet included in the book is second to none. |

Fact Or Fiction $86.64 Because of its global reach, reduction of time restraints, and ability to reduce costs and increase sales, use of the Internet, the World Wide Web (WWW), and related technologies can be a competitive tool in the arsenal of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). Countries the world over are interested in the successful adoption of the Internet by SMEs since a vast majority of their employment comes from that sector. While SMEs were touted in the late 1990′s amd early 2000′s as being advanced in their use of eBusiness/eCommerce, there is little empirical evidence that SMEs in the United States have optimized their use of the Internet and are engaging in a fully-integrated eBusiness process. This research investigated the level of Internet usage for business solutions by small Minnesota-based manufacturers. The results of this research indicate that although a majority of respondents use the Internet in their business activities and/or have their own Web sites, the adoption of the Internet as a business tool is limited to non-interactive, brochure-ware Web sites. |

$45 It’s the American dream – start a company, make a fortune, and retire early. But to become multimillionaires in their twenties, as Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin did, boggles the mind. All they did, after all, is come up with a better way to search for things on the Internet, right? Only in part. No company achieves a market value in the range of $172 billion (in early 2008) based on a single good idea. This new entry in the Corporations That Changed the World series shows how Google exploited the rage for click through ads, instant news, mapping and satellite imagery, email, and more to create a high-tech behemoth that has done nothing less than change the way we work and live.Chapters in the book: ? Explain the importance of the company and the essential disruptions it introduced that changed business forever. -Detail Google’s origins and brief history? Present biographies of the founders and the historical context in which they launched the company. -Explain Google’s strategies and innovations? Show how Google’s treatment of employees – food for free, concierge services, laundry facilities, and more – set the bar high for any company eager to attract the best and brightest? Assess Google’s impact on society, technology, processes, methods, etc. (Huge, considering that the company’s name has become a verb in the English language!)? Show how Google beat Yahoo and other companies working hard to create a roadmap of the Internet. -Detail financial results over the years? Predict Google’s future prospects and successes. In addition, author Virginia Scott offers special features that include a look at the colorful people associated with Google, interesting trivia, ethical issues and controversies, a focus on products, what its detractors have to say, and a look at where the company is headed. Google – a company that changed, and is changing, the world. |

Innovate or Perish: Managing the Enduring Technology Company in the Global Market $1.25 Like it or not, the American business landscape has changed. Going directly to the heart of why large companies fail to sustain innovation, Innovate or Perish offers practical, realistic solutions to this negative trend and confronts readers with the reality that the decision to survive or thrive lies in how corporate boardrooms view innovation and the largely invisible, yet massively influential, intangible economy.Edited by Edward Kahn, this seminal book includes contributions from seasoned intellectual property (IP) professionals—including Ed Walsh, Karl Jorda, Wayne Jaeschke, Abha Divine, and Damon Matteo—offering expert advice based on their diverse experiences working with companies such as Boeing, Dow, DuPont, Xerox, PARC, Hewlett-Packard, Pitney Bowes, Ciba-Geigy, and more. Innovative Planning For Electronic Commerce And Enterprises, A Reference Model $13.25 Hsu and Pant in Innovative Planning for Electronic Commerce and Enterprises: A Reference Model have proposed a management planning model for developing strategic goals for e-commerce enterprises. The authors feel they may be provocative sometimes; however, the field is so new that there is no working model for an e-commerce enterprise with a proven success record. In this book, Hsu and Pant develop a framework for a working model. This framework has three parts: (1) The first part is the planning model and a methodology. The planning model is based on principles derived from the literature and the author’s research. The methodology also uses Value Chain Analysis to connect e-commerce goals with business processes. (2) The second part evaluates the model and calibrates it to industrial cases and established scholarly results in the field. (3) The last part consists of three exploratory plans for some industrial applications, including supply chain integration, Internet banking, and customer service (ordering) for heavy industry. About fifty cases are discussed in the book at various degrees of depth. The three industrial cases illustrate how to apply the planning model using the methodology. Hence, the book’s e-commerce reference model is obtained from the planning model, its methodology, and the industrial benchmarks. |
