”I hope to share my struggles, my successes, and everything in between”: A rhetorical study of health blogs. $49.99 Many patients who are experiencing a serious illness need a way to express their emotions and continue their everyday lives. For some patients, one outlet is through a health blog. Health blogs allow these individuals to share their emotions about their illness through narrative and with a wide audience over the Internet.;The visual and textual elements of health blogs work together to create an identity that is unique to each blogger. As these visual and textual elements combine, one can see the narratives emerge. Through these narratives, the bloggers persuade both themselves and others that they can to some degree) control what is happening to them.;An analysis of these health blog narratives will show how their messages are persuasive. From this analysis, we can argue that using these health blogs for health information is not a viable application. Instead, the audience should understand health blogs as representing specific individuals and their experiences with illness as they try to continue their everyday lives. |

100 First Pages $14.52 This book is called 100 First Pages because that’s what it is. Each page in the book is ‘supposed’ to be the first page of a novel. Next to that page, on the left, are my comments about how the novel might go, along with some of my personal thoughts on the ‘subject’. That’s the best part, because it is a mini-encyclopedia, almanac, journal and, to some extent, a blog. The book covers a large array of topics and genres. When you buy the book and read it, you can go to my website listed in the back and vote for your favorite BEGINNING. You can also suggest a title for the book. I promise that I will write the novel which receives the most votes for publication AND if you are the person who suggests the Best Title, i.e. the one I will use, you will get a cover credit, an entire page inside to write anything you like and one dollar for every copy sold! Check out the preview and give it a try. |

29 Jobs And A Million Lies $10 Dark, twisted, and outrageous, 29 Jobs and a Million Lies is a glimpse at counterculture’s underbelly and attempts to succeed within that world. From demented B-movie, roach-infested film production offices chock full of freakish characters to the Cannes Film Festival; from starting a punk rock record label to its hard but inevitable crash; from a grimy, Greenwich Village restaurant kitchen to failed attempts at joining the Navy, you gotta ask, What’s a nice girl from the suburbs doing all of this dirty work for?29 Jobs and a Million Lies is the gut-wrenching, self-deprecating account of how ambition to stand out was wiped out by clumsy choices, immaturity and self-defeating righteousness. 29 Jobs is a post-GenX novel, except it’s true, and in the vein of Sarah Vowell, Chuck Klosterman, and Dave Eggers.Jenn Topper is just over the moon that she’s released 29 Jobs and a Million Lies. She’s currently a corporate sellout but her two perfect little boys don’t seem to mind one bit. Her first novel, Getting the Old Gang Back Together will be out soon so please stay tuned. 5 Ways to Carry a Goat: A Blogger’s World Tour $28.95 There’s nothing like a blog post to inspire angry rants from anonymous readers: it’s the talkback radio of the digital age. So why is Australia’s leading travel blogger Ben Groundwater setting out to put faces to his readers’ made-up names?  Armed with a backpack, a laptop and a cover story in case of emergency, Ben has a plan: to travel the world, relying purely on the kindness of his sometimes frightening, but always interesting, readers. After posting a cry for help on his blog, he has a globe-circling itinerary of apparently friendly strangers who have offered him their homes – not to mention their radio shows, hallucinogenic drugs, beachside eco-resorts and daughters’ weddings.  This is Ben’s chance to dig deep into the realms of his digital universe: Who’s out there reading his blog? Where do they live? What are their lives like? And how do you carry a goat home in Ethiopia? Over 14 weeks, 14 countries and about a thousand beers, he answers these questions and many more. Five Ways to Carry a Goat is the hilarious tale of putting virtual friendships to the test of reality. |

A Better Pencil : Readers, Writers, and the Digital Revolution $18.95 Computers, now the writer’s tool of choice, are still blamed by skeptics for a variety of ills, from speeding writing up to the point of recklessness, to complicating or trivializing the writing process, to destroying the English language itself. A Better Pencil puts our complex, still-evolving hate-love relationship with computers and the internet into perspective, describing how the digital revolution influences our reading and writing practices, and how the latest technologies differ from what came before. The book explores our use of computers as writing tools in light of the history of communication technology, a history of how we love, fear, and actually use our writing technologies–not just computers, but also typewriters, pencils, and clay tablets. Dennis Baron shows that virtually all writing implements–and even writing itself–were greeted at first with anxiety and outrage: the printing press disrupted the “almost spiritual connection” between the writer and the page; the typewriter was “impersonal and noisy” and would “destroy the art of handwriting.” Both pencils and computers were created for tasks that had nothing to do with writing. Pencils, crafted by woodworkers for marking up their boards, were quickly repurposed by writers and artists. The computer crunched numbers, not words, until writers saw it as the next writing machine. Baron also explores the new genres that the computer has launched: email, the instant message, the web page, the blog, social-networking pages like MySpace and Facebook, and communally-generated texts like Wikipedia and the Urban Dictionary, not to mention YouTube. Here then is a fascinating history of our tangled dealings with a wide range of writing instruments, from ancient papyrus to the modern laptop. With dozens of illustrations and many colorful anecdotes, the book will enthrall anyone interested in language, literacy, or writing. |

A Failure of Capitalism: The Crisis of ’08 and the Descent into Depression $17.95 The financial and economic crisis that began in 2008 is the most alarming of our lifetime because of the warp-speed at which it is occurring. How could it have happened, especially after all that we’ve learned from the Great Depression? Why wasn’t it anticipated so that remedial steps could be taken to avoid or mitigate it? What can be done to reverse a slide into a full-blown depression? Why have the responses to date of the government and the economics profession been so lackluster? Richard Posner presents a concise and non-technical examination of this mother of all financial disasters and of the, as yet, stumbling efforts to cope with it. No previous acquaintance on the part of the reader with macroeconomics or the theory of finance is presupposed. This is a book for intelligent generalists that will interest specialists as well.Among the facts and causes Posner identifies are: excess savingsflowing in from Asia and the reckless lowering of interest rates by theFederal Reserve Board; the relation between executive compensation,short-term profit goals, and risky lending; the housing bubble fuelled bylow interest rates, aggressive mortgage marketing, and loose regulations; the low savings rate of American people; and the highly leveraged balance sheets of large financial institutions.Posner analyzes the two basic remedial approaches to the crisis, which correspond to the two theories of the cause of the Great Depression:the monetarist—that the Federal Reserve Board allowed the money supply to shrink, thus failing to prevent a disastrous deflation—and the Keynesian—that the depression was theproduct of a credit binge in the 1920’s, a stock-market crash, and the ensuing downward spiral in economic activity. Posner concludes that the pendulum swung too far and that our financial markets need to be more heavily regulated.Read Richard Posner’s blog, and his |

A Journal of Personal Exploration, Reflection and Discovery $3.99 As high tech as the world of personal communication is, it still relies on the written word to transfer thoughts and ideas. Writing a sentence solidifies a thought as well as records it so to be available for review in the future. Significant Sentences provides exercises facilitating the combination of “your personal spirit,” quiet reflection and your past experiences to come together and produce sentence that is recorded or ‘saved’. Using paper and pencil, keystroke and screen or even your smart phone, use Significant Sentences as a personal journal or a way to reach out using social media tools like Facebook. “Blog” or “tweet” your moments of discovery. How we write and transmit ideas is vastly changing but it still comes down to words conveying thoughts and emotions. These exercises can serve as a connection between teacher and student, speaker and audience, cyber audience or soul to soul. By sharing stories and ideas about your interpersonal life electronically or on paper, the individual may discover hidden writing talents, a gift for poetry, blogging or tweeting. Your reflections may become a poem, song or school essay. The variety and quantity of questions in each exercise are designed to spur the writer on by providing some starting point and giving some direction. Significant Sentences can be the catalyst for internal retrospection. Writing can reveal the negative as well as the positive. That is the cathartic joy and challenge. Facing those negatives or seeing them more clearly can be exactly what you need to conquer them. Trust yourself that good can be derived from recording your thoughts and reflections, and the connection with the self is the key to personal enlightenment. May you find hidden treasures and truth within? |

A Planet of Viruses $12  Viruses are the smallest living things known to science, yet they hold the entire planet in their sway. We are most familiar with the viruses that give us colds or the flu, but viruses also cause a vast range of other diseases, including one disorder that makes people sprout branch-like growths as if they were trees. Viruses have been a part of our lives for so long, in fact, that we are actually part virus: the human genome contains more DNA from viruses than our own genes. Meanwhile, scientists are discovering viruses everywhere they look: in the soil, in the ocean, even in caves miles underground.            This fascinating book explores the hidden world of viruses—a world that we all inhabit. Here Carl Zimmer, popular science writer and author of Discover magazine’s award-winning blog The Loom, presents the latest research on how viruses hold sway over our lives and our biosphere, how viruses helped give rise to the first life-forms, how viruses are producing new diseases, how we can harness viruses for our own ends, and how viruses will continue to control our fate for years to come. In this eye-opening tour of the frontiers of biology, where scientists are expanding our understanding of life as we know it, we learn that some treatments for the common cold do more harm than good; that the world’s oceans are home to an astonishing number of viruses; and that the evolution of HIV is now in overdrive, spawning more mutated strains than we care to imagine.            The New York Times Book Review calls Carl Zimmer “as fine a science essayist as we have.” A Planet of Viruses is sure to please his many fans and further enhance his reputation as one of America’s most respected and admired science journalists.  |

A Year of Wine: Perfect Pairings, Great Buys, and What to Sip for Each Season $1.99 A lively and informative guide to a year of wine enjoyment and appreciation from acclaimed wine expert and blogger Tyler Colman, aka “Dr. Vino”In A Year of Wine, award-winning educator Tyler “Dr. Vino” Colman, whose wine blog was hailed by Food & Wine magazine as “one of the seven best,” views winter, spring, summer, and fall through the glass of his favorite impact-resistant stemware, pairing each month with its perfect ports, Pinots, and bubblies — and offering good value recommendations for them all. Throughout, Colman reminds readers to try to pair their pours with context, which is wildly underrated when it comes to enjoying your favorite bottle. And while people tend naturally to drink lighter, more refreshing wines during the warm months and heavier, more serious wines during the winter months, Colman takes the seasonal approach a step further by offering innovative recommendations and enlightening facts that will allow readers to impress their friends for twelve months straight. Is there a perfect wine to serve with chips and salsa on Super Bowl Sunday? Which bottles will help you drown away your tax- day blues without blowing your new budget? Colman answers these questions and much more as he pairs wines with each season, occasion, and moment. Recommending thoughtful and affordable wines for special celebrations and everyday enjoyment, offering tips on beginning a wine collection or spring cleaning the one you have, exploring how to drink with the smallest possible carbon footprint, and explaining how to maximize your wine experience when you dine out, Colman makes wine easy to understand and, most important, to savor.Colman also shares thesecret gems of his favorite wine tourism destinations — where to find the best wine shops in Paris, which Portuguese vintners still crush grapes with their bare feet, and how you can take a ten-tasting-room tour with one stop in a tiny Oregon town — and turns to some of the |

A Year of Wine: Perfect Pairings, Great Buys, and What to Sip for Each Season $16.99 A lively and informative guide to a year of wine enjoyment and appreciation from acclaimed wine expert and blogger Tyler Colman, aka “Dr.

A community intervention strategy to increase immigrant youth resilience. $49.99 In institutions of higher learning across Arizona, undocumented students often go unnoticed. Many of these students were brought into the U.S. as young children and many have graduated from Arizona high schools. Arizona’s Proposition 300, implemented in 2007, has impacted undocumented students by denying them state sponsored financial aid and in-state classification for tuition. This has resulted in a growing concern as to how undocumented students and college staff are going to deal with this mandate. In this study, the following two research questions were developed to investigate this issue: (1) How will this mandate impact undocumented students’ lives?; and, (2) What are the obstacles these individuals will face when they can no longer afford a higher education? Using an action research approach, a website was created to provide the undocumented students as well as the community information about Proposition 300, college access and resources available. Data were collected through administration web statistics, a 42 question survey, blog postings and follow-up interviews. The website was open to any interne user, which allowed people from various geographic locations to participate. Quantitative analyses gathered from website statistics indicated significant activity from participants. The total number of website visits from participants was 752, viewing 3,310 total pages and averaging 6:44 minutes per visit. Participants visited the website from various locations throughout the U.S. and from Mexico and Puerto Rico. Of the participants (n = 299), many indicated they were female, students and Hispanic. Most participants found the website useful and confirmed high resilience characteristics and, due to the website, felt optimistic about their educational future. Qualitative analyses gathered from survey data (n = 299) and blog postings (n = 64), indicated that the greatest concern of undocumented students was that they could not afford the increase in |

Accidental Genius $17.99 When it comes to creating ideas, we hold ourselves back. That’s because inside each of us is an internal editor whose job is to forever polish our thoughts, so we sound smart and in control, and so that we fit into society. But what happens when we encounter problems where such conventional thinking fails us? How to get unstuck?  For Mark Levy, the answer is freewriting, a technique he’s used for years to solve all types of business problems, and generate ideas for books, articles and blog posts. Freewriting is deceptively simple: Start writing as fast as you can, for as long as you can, about a subject you care deeply about, while ignoring the standard rules of grammar and spelling. Your internal editor won’t be able to keep up with your output, and will be temporarily shunted into the background. You’ll now be able to think more honestly and resourcefully than before, and will generate breakthrough ideas and solutions that you couldn’t have created any other way. Levy shares six freewriting secrets designed to knock out your editor and let your genius run free. He also includes fifteen problem-solving and creativity-stimulating principles you can use if you need more firepower—seven of which are new to this edition—and stories of problems he and others have solved through freewriting. Also new to this edition: an extensive section on how to refine your freewriting into something you can share with the world. Although Levy originally taught freewriting as a private brainstorming technique, over the years he and his clients have found that, with some tweaking, it’s a great way to generate content for books, articles, and other thought leadership pieces. |

Adversarial classification: An ensemble-based approach. $49.99 Spam has been studied and dealt with extensively in the email, web and, recently, the blog domain. Recent work has addressed the problem of non-stationarity of data using ensemble based approaches. Adversarial classification has been handled by retraining base classifiers using labeled samples obtained from the ensemble. However, frequent retraining is expensive. The need is to dynamically determine when the classifiers should be retrained and to retrain only those classifiers that are performing poorly. We show how mutual agreement between classifiers can be use to reduce retraining time, measure runtime performance, and keep track of the weakest performing classifier. We back our research with experimental results using real life data from blogs as a special case of spam. |

Bailout Nation: How Greed and Easy Money Corrupted Wall Street and Shook the World Economy $24.95 “Do you find yourself wondering: How did we get here? How did the United States of America get into such a predicament whereby in one year, 2008, the financial system nearly vaporized, the stock market crashed, real estate tanked, and major corporations were being bailed out. . . .How did our great country, a bastion of capitalism, devolve into a Bailout Nation where the gains were privatized, but the losses were socialized?”—From the Foreword by Bill FleckensteinIn Bailout Nation, Barry Ritholtz, author of the popular finance blog www.ritholtz.com/blog/, deftly mixes financial history with an insider’s knowledge of modern finance to reveal how we’ve arrived at one of the worst economic crises ever. Engaging and informative, this book clearly shows how years of trying to control the economy with easy money has finally caught up with the United States and how the government’s practice of repeatedly rescuing Wall Street—as well as other industries and organizations—has come back to bite them.Divided into five compelling parts, this timely guide opens with a brief history of bailouts, detailing their particular patterns and unintended consequences. From here, it quickly moves on to reveal the events, individuals, and institutions that have shaped our current situation. You’ll see how various government interventions—in individual companies such as Lockheed during the 1970s, in specific sectors such as banking in the early 1990s, and eventually, entire markets with the rescue of stocks in 2000—opened up a Pandora’s Box. You’ll also discover how the misguided philosophies of many players, from Fed Chairmen and Presidents to Senators and Treasury Secretaries, promoted the massive meltdown that has engulfed our global economy.Ritholtz leaves no stone unturned, as he breaks down how the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate targeting policies as well as a condition known as moral hazard—the belief that |

Barack Obama: This Improbable Quest $38.95 Barack Obama is quickly becoming America’s most popular politician, and his run for the presidency has brought huge crowds at home and an unprecedented wave of international attention as well. Much more than a biography, this book is a political tour of Obama’s legislative experience as well as his ideas about race, religion, and politics. Political writer John K. Wilson, author of four previous books including a study of Newt Gingrich, explores the reaction Obama has received from the left, the right, and the media. As the first presidential candidate from Generation X, Obama has generated an exciting movement of young people to support his campaign as he defines a new kind of broadly popular progressive politics. As improbable as such a quest may be this fresh new candidate may be just the right one to bridge not only generations but ideologies that often divide. Amid all the hype surrounding Obama, this book provides the first in-depth look at what he believes, what he represents, and how he might transform American politics.See John Wilson discuss his book on CSPAN CSPAN InterviewSee John Wilson’s Huffington Post entry which was read by Rush Limbaugh on his show: huffingtonpost.com/ Visit John Wilson’s website and blog at obamapolitics.comThis title is discussed in a broad analysis of Obama at the following link: opendemocracy.net |

Behold The Faithfulness Of God $9.71 “Why are we so quick to explain away the promises and provisions of God? How can believers’ desires become one with those of their Maker? Matt Edwards not only addresses these questions with biblical clarity but leaves the reader with a burning desire to pursue a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God.”-Leighton Flowers Youth Evangelism Director, Baptist General Convention of Texas, Wylie, TX”In [Matt's] book that dissects prayer from every direction, he remains deadest on the importance of prayer, illustrating with a litany of personal experiences how it has buoyed his life and ministry. His work bathed in scripture is ‘heart to heart’-from his to his reader’s, reminding us time and again that God is infinitely bigger than anything we’ve seen, heard or done. Edwards’ book reminds us that prayer remains our strongest linkage to him”.-Dr. Don Newbury Chancellor, Howard Payne University, Burleson, TX”The book you are holding in your hand is not just another book. Rather it is the story of one man’s journey of faith. Matt is a man of the Word, a man of prayer and this book shares the valuable insight that will challenge your own prayer life. You will be blessed and God will be honored as you read these pages.”-Charles M. Roberts Pastor, Denman Avenue Baptist Church, Lufkin, TXMatt Edwards serves as the pastor of First Baptist Church in Paradise, Texas. He also serves as the president for No Compromise Ministries. Bestseller! $19.95 BASED ON A TRUE STORY. In 1994 Misha Defonseca joined up with tiny Mt Ivy Press to produce a book about her childhood experiences during the Holocaust. A Jewish war orphan who lost her identity when her parents were arrested by the Nazis, she set out on foot at age 7 to find them, walking 3,000 across war-torn Europe and hiding in the forest where she was befriended by wolves. The book was just hitting its stride, attracting interest from Disney Studios and Oprah Winfrey, when suddenly Defonseca turned against her publisher, Jane Daniel, and filed a lawsuit. Claiming that the publisher had not done enough to promote the book, she won a $33 million judgment, one of the largest in Massachusetts history. Ten years and thirteen additional lawsuits later, Daniel was wiped out financially and emotionally. In the interim, Defonseca’s book had become a bestseller in eighteen countries and a feature film. Then Daniel, by accident, stumbled across documents suggesting that Defonseca was not who she claimed to be.Daniel’s only remaining asset was the story about the case that she had been writing in her head through the whole ordeal. She began posting chapters, as she completed them, on a blog, not knowing what to expect. “This book is being written in real time,” she wrote. “I do not know how it will end.”What happened next is miraculous ‒ a truth-is-stranger-than-fiction detective story: Daniel was contacted by a forensic genealogist who came across the blog and thought she could crack the case. With no name, date or place of birth to go on it seemed an impossible mission. But truth has a mysterious way of seeking the light. After 20 years of deceiving millions of people,Defonseca, at last, was confronted with her real identity: the daughter of a Nazi collaborator from a Catholic family. Defonseca confessed that her memoire was a hoax. This is a story of the wildcat world of independent publishing, the horrors of the legal system, and most of all, a |

Birding Babylon: A Soldier’s Journal from Iraq $9.95 Early in 2004, Sergeant First Class Jonathan Trouern-Trend of the Connecticut National Guard began a year’s deployment in Iraq. He had been a birder from the age of 12, so naturally he looked for birds during his free time on base and on trips “outside the wire.” From nearly day one until he left Iraq, Trouern-Trend wrote about his sightings in an online journal that attracted thousands of readers. Now some of the highlights of his “Birding Babylon” blog are collected in this small, beautiful volume, designed to resemble a birder’s journal. Cutting through the politics of war like birdsong, it reminds us of our imperishable connection with nature; of how birds and their journeys tie the world together; of the persistence of life even in a wasted land. |

Blogging Professional $2.99 Dear Friend,If you’re anything like me, you’re fed up with all of the low-quality, useless products that promise instant fortunes with simple niche blogs that end up being little more than a starters guide to “installing Wordpress”.If you have ever bought into these bogus products, don’t blame yourself. When I first got started online, I bought everything that I could get my hands on, believing that one of these guides would surely be the ‘golden grail’ in helping me build a profitable online blog based business.I spent hundreds of dollars on these useless products, chasing every opportunity I could find. I subscribed to every business opportunity magazine I could find. I spent hours every day on various internet marketing forums.I’ll admit it, I was as desperate as they come. I felt crushed under the weight of a controlling boss, office politics, and a dead-end job that only served to make my employer wealthier than he already was. I wanted to get out of the rat race once and for all and start working for the one person that really matters; myself. But I approached it the wrong way, and rather than following the strategies used by those who really were raking in cash every single day with their blogs, I spent a fortune buying every single guide on profitable blogging that I could get my hands on.But there’s a HUGE problem with this strategy, and after spending $2,159 on useless junk I finally realized exactly what was going on.The majority of those guides that are being peddled all over the Internet aren’t even written by experienced bloggers! – and tell me, how can someone teach you how to make money in an industry that they aren’t even a part of?They simply can’t.. which is why you continue fiddling around with guide after guide, still searching for a straightforward blueprint that will give you everything you need to start making money online. And you finally |

Blogging for Teens $1.99 Not your typical computer tutorial, this book aspires to discuss more than how to simply use the software it targets the uses of blogging, specifically among teen users, and how this technology is used in the definition of an online personality. In other words, this book doesn’t just show readers how to build a blog; this title focuses on how to effectively use a blog, all under the auspices of, again, a younger audience. Teens account for the majority of blogs currently in use on the Web. The “diary” component of a blog, and how this diary concept can be used to define an “online personality” has obvious connotations to a typical teen mindset. Readers also delve into other related technologies – specifically, instant messaging and the use of online avatars (i.e. online games/Web tools that allow the representation of the self through a virtual character) – which have an increasing teen focus. For example, parents are using instant messaging as a way to break down communication walls with their teenagers (and vice versa). This book capitalizes on these growing issues but again from a use perspective, and from a teenage audience perspective. For example, this book considers the question: How do I use technology (in this case, instant messaging) to better communicate with my parents? Appealing to an increasingly large audience, this book capitalizes on the growing use of these technologies among teens, how they apply to the development of an “e-personality” and how these “personalities” interact via technology with other teen users. In addition to the personal experience the author can offer from having a “blogging” teen daughter, John Gosney also has his own blog site-http://www.my-15minutes.com. |

Blogging the Political: Politics and Participation in a Networked Society $35.95 The popular blog-tracking site technorati.com reports the existance of well over one hundred million blogs. Despite the medium’s ubiquity, the impact of political blogging on politics and civic engagemment has not been systematically examined. In an era of depressed civic engagement, where access to the media by common citizens is limited, blogs have the power to change the political landscape.Blogging the Political catalogs the individuals engaged in political blogging, explains why they started blogging, and examines what they hope to gain from it. The larger question at hand is whether and how political blogging facilitates civic engagement and mobilization in the United States. Do political bloggers participate in politics only through blogging or also through more traditional activities such as voting or sending an email to an elected official? Do they encourage their readers to undertake political activities, and how do they go about doing so? Examining the activity of a diverse spectrum of bloggers, Pole concludes that blogging is indeed a new and important form of political participation, one that can potentially transform politics and lead to increased civic engagement. |
