Backlinks: A practical summary

back links

For any web page to be ‘ranked’ in the search engines and attract visitors it’s critical it has backlinks. When thinking about backlinks there are three things you need to consider, the web page from which the backlinks originate, the anchor text of the backlinks and what’s on the page to which the backlinks directs the visitor to.

The quantity of backlinks

The volume of backlinks to a page is one of the elements the search engines take into account when deciding where to position the page in the results displayed to the searcher.

The source of the backlinks

The pages from which backlinks originate pass ‘authority’ and visitors to the page to which the backlinks point. So it follows that pages with backlinks from authoritative pages will receive better consideration from the search engines. Pages from sources such as educational (.edu) or government (.gov) sites naturally carry more trust and authority.

Google Page Rank

Google has the notion of ‘page rank’, this is the property it attributes to a page it considers to have a history of accumulating authority from backlinks..

The ‘anchor text’

When you see a backlink on a web page it normally has a label a word or text associated with the content at the page to which this backlink is pointing, what this ‘anchor text’ says has influence upon the value the search engines award to the link. Relevance is the first principle for all search engine software and it follows if the text on the page is about ‘drying chillis” then it is from a search engine’s point of view, more valuable for the backlink’s anchor text to this page to contain the word ‘chilli’ as opposed to a related term such as ‘drying spices’.

Common mistakes

The majority people screw up their backlinks strategies because they focus on quantity as opposed to quality of backlinks. For example if the majority of your backlinks to your ‘parenting’ page come from pages not related to ‘parenting’ then whilst you have backlinks they will almost always bring you the wrong visitors.

How to build backlinks

So let me tell you my fail safe approach for acquiring backlinks that will make the search engines love you and bring quality and appropriate visitors to your web pages.

  1. Finding the right keywords from the outset is critical.
  2. I always aim to put together a keyword cloud.
  3. I always start with a single primary keyword or key phrase which has substantial visitor traffic.
  4. The fastest and cheapest method to find out how much traffic a keyword or key phrase is getting is to use the Google keywords discovery tool.
  5. I analyse words and search phrases associated with my primary phrase and build my ‘cloud’.
  6. Using this cloud I generate a selection of content containing articles, videos and blog posts each with backlinks embedded with the appropriate anchor text and then use a portfolio of content distribution tools to push my materials to a group of directories.
  7. My guiding principle is to author content that will attract visitors and compel them to follow the backlinks to my money pages as well as send backlinks.

How you shouldn’t acquire backlinks

backlinks clinic

Hmmmm, this is a immersive concept and I need to emphasise it’s not an exact science. But here is what I have learned in my analysis at the Backlinks clinic:

Authority - simplified

The more authority your web pages have the higher you will rank on Google. Authority means that searchers trust you and your content. The good news is that authorities trusted by humans are also trusted by Google. A great example is the .edu and .gov suffixes. These suffixes imply they are trustworthy sources of content and it’s a proven fact that as far as Google is concerned backlinks from these domains to your web pages will “pass on” authority to your web pages. Another perfect example is Wikipedia as the web pages here are mostly authored by by group of people as opposed to a single marketer.

So it follows that authority is significantly influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative sites link to your web pages then you inherit their authority and as far as Google is concerned you become more authoritative and so the trust in your content by Google goes up.

How Google declares what is and isn’t authoritative is kept secret for good reason and falls in line with Google’s thinking of “Do no evil”. The last thing the Internet needs is an individual or a group manipulating the mechanisms that Google uses in its efforts to try and regulate probably the most significant technological asset of our times.

How not to get Authority and Backlinks

And on this thought it’s valuable to state some distasteful sources and practices of building backlinks that Google not only dislikes but appears to be moving aggressively to ‘classify’ as illegitimate authorities. In no particular order of severity, the prime offenders are:

  • Paid backlinks – web sites where people buy and sell backlinks
  • Comment spam – entries that contain links on blog pages that are just not associated to the main content.
  • Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or otherwise
  • Fast growth – there are a myriad of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t dumb. Any sudden rise in the number of backlinks is going to register on Google’s radar, specifically if it’s a brand new domain.
  • Backlinks from unscrupulous sites – these are particularly nasty as you are guilty by association - need I say more.

*There is another factor where I may be on dodgy ground, but major news properties appear to get a lot of authority and I have definitely found significant numbers of the same article over and over again on different portals with no penalties, I am still looking at this, only as some of the results I am seeing go against the consistent behaviors I usually expect to see. More on this is in a future article….

Search Engine Optimization and backlinks

back links

Often referred to as inbound links, backlinks are the sledgehammer of search engine positioning and traffic generation. When thinking about backlinks there are three things you need to consider, the source from which the backlinks originate, the anchor text of the backlinks and what’s on the page to which the backlinks directs the visitor to.

The volume of backlinks

Just about all of the search engines count the quantity of backlinks to a web page when deciding where this page should appear in the search results.

The origin of the backlinks

The source of a backlink can pass authority and indeed traffic to the page to which it points. So it follows that pages with backlinks from ‘trusted pages will receive better consideration from the search engines. Pages from sources such as educational (.edu) or government (.gov) sites naturally are attributed with more trust and authority.

Google Page Rank

Google has the concept of ‘page rank’, this is the property it attributes to a page it considers to have a history of accumulating authority from backlinks..

The ‘anchor text’

Just like a label, the backlink anchor text has influence over the search engines valuation of the backlink. Relevance is the first principle for every search engine algorithms and therefore if the content of the page is about ‘drying chillis” then it is from a search engine’s perspective, more valuable for the backlink’s anchor text to this page to contain the word ‘chilli’ as opposed to a related term such as ‘drying spices’.

Common mistakes

A lot of people mess up their backlinks building activities because they focus on quantity as opposed to quality of backlinks. Having a substantial number of backlinks to your page doesn’t necessarily mean the search engines will consider your page as relevant.

How to build backlinks

So here is my no obligation guidance for getting backlinks to your pages, great positions in the search engine results pages and quality traffic to your web pages.

  1. Initially you should focus on choosing the correct keywords.
  2. I like to build a keyword ‘cloud’.
  3. You should always begin by identifying a key word or phrase which has a good traffic.
  4. The fastest and cheapest method to find out how much traffic a keyword or key phrase is getting is to use the Google keywords discovery tool.
  5. I look at words and search phrases relative to my ‘top’ level phrase and create my ‘cloud’.
  6. Using this cloud I create a selection of content containing articles, videos and blog posts each with backlinks embedded with the appropriate anchor text and then use a suite of content distribution systems to send my articles and videos to a wide range of directories.
  7. My golden rule is to write content that will attract visitors and compel them to follow the backlinks to my money pages as well as send backlinks.

Backlinks - use the wrong methods at your peril

backlinks

OK, this is a big subject and I need to emphasise it’s not clear cut. But here is what I know in my work at the Backlinks clinic:

Authority - explained

The more authority your web pages have the higher you will rank on Google. Authority means that searchers trust you and your information. The great news is that authorities trusted by humans are also recognised as trustworthy by Google. A great example is the .edu and .gov suffixes. These domains imply they are authoratitive sources of content and it’s a proven fact that in the eyes of Google backlinks from these web addresses to your site will “pass on” authority to your web pages. Another shining example is Wikipedia as the contents here are almost always authored by by tribes of people as opposed to a single marketer.

So it follows that authority is very heavily influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative content link to you then you receive their apparent trust and in the eyes of Google you become more authoritative and so the trust in your web pages by Google goes up.

How Google pronounces what is and isn’t authoritative is a guarded secret for solid reasons and falls in line with Google’s thinking of “Do no evil”. The last thing the web needs is an individual or a group manipulating the methods that Google untilzes in its efforts to try and regulate probably the most significant technological resource of this period in history.

Backlinking methods you should avoid

And on this thought it’s worth my while stating some distasteful sources and practices of acquiring backlinks that Google not only dislikes but appears to be moving aggressively to ‘classify’ as negative authorities. In no particular order of severity, the common offenders are:

  • Paid backlinks – web sites where people purchase and sell backlinks
  • Comment spam – entries that have links on web pages that are just not associated to the main content.
  • Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or otherwise
  • Unnatural growth – there are a myriad of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t stupid. Any sudden rise in the amount of backlinks is going to register on Google’s radar, especially if it’s a brand new domain.
  • Backlinks from bad reputation web pages – these are particularly nasty as you are guilty by association - need I say more.

*There is another factor where I may be on dodgy ground, but large media portals appear to get a lot of authority and I have definitely observed significant numbers of the same content over and over again on different web sites with no penalties, I am still monitoring this, only as some of the results I am seeing go against the consistent behaviors I usually expect to see. get more backlinks

BREAKING NEWS: Calling all Wordpress Blog Owners

About me

Until recently I tested Internet Marketing software and methods and published the results on a number of blogs. On average I personally answer around six hundred questions about Internet Marketing through my blog every week. I know a lot of people who are battling against the odds at the moment and whilst I am making a modest income on the web from my work I am more and more doing what I can to assist others to avoid the mistakes, choose the right strategies and get off to a good start.

From my work I find that probably half of the Internet marketing community are honest people but the issue is a lot of them are not very good at what they do and teach. Until now I have limited publishing my experiences to a small group of sites because their owners have been very supportive in helping me with my evaluations.

Over 600 reviews

The total number of ‘products’ I have reviewed over five years is just north of 600, naturally I will only be writing about products that are still for sale. Every product review is a direct result of me using the product in anger and naturally I will be sharing the rough and the smooth with my subscribers.

Easy to use and organised directory

To help you make the decisions that will work best for you I am going to organise the product summaries into a simple and easy to use directory and every product will be typed by the level of  experience required, amount you can expect to pay, work and how soon you can expect to see results.

First Review - The ‘blueprint’ for Wordpress blog success

The first subject I’m going to tackle is Wordpress Blogs as this is not just a great subject for newbies to begin but many blog owners don’t realise the opportunities they are missing. Everyone should have a blog and I am passionate about blogging as a significant amount of my ’monthly salary’ comes from blogs but and however I am fully aware that installing a blog can be a little bit tricky so if you join my list I will show you step by step how to do this.

Create once and replicate

Blogs are cool in as much once you get one working properly and earning dollars then you simply replicate it. But getting the first blog correct is essential and this is where you need the knowledge about how to create a ‘blueprint blog’ and what Internet Marketing ‘products’ and strategies you should use to build a robust foundation for growth and a regular income.

No bullshit, just answers.

So if you own a Wordpress blog or you need some practical and personal help with your purchases of Internet Marketing products then please do sign up to my list at www.backlinksclinic.com.

I am self taught and have closely followed the evolution of Internet Marketing for just over five years. I answer hundreds of questions a week on my blog from Internet Marketers of all different backgrounds and levels of skill. I know a lot of people who are struggling at the moment and whilst I am making a half decent income on the internet from my work I am more and more doing what I can to assist others to avoid the mistakes, choose the right tools and get off to a good start.

In my reviews I have discovered a significant number of Internet Marketers who look the part on paper but fail to deliver what they claim. Up until now I have been publishing my results on a group of of blogs and sites whose owners have asked me to contribute content about my encounters to their sites.

Over 600 reviews

Over a five year period I have reviewed more than 600 products and I will only be publishing reviews on products that are still on the market. I have tested all of the products I review and whilst in some cases I know the authors personally this doesn’t dissuade me from telling what I really think about what is good and what is bad about each product.

Simple to use and organised index

I am really keen for everyone finds my blog gets some help so I am making sure that every ‘product’ summary is typed in terms of the amount of money they will have to spend, the level of skill they will need, how much time they should spend and how long it normally take to see some results.

First Edition - The ‘blueprint’ for Wordpress blog success

Wordpress Blogs are probably the easiest way to get started in Internet Marketing so I am going to begin with a set of reviews of products that can turn these search engine magnets into cash machines. Everyone should have a blog and I am passionate about blogging as a large portion of my ’monthly salary’ comes from blogs but and however I am fully aware that installing a blog can be a little bit tricky so if you join my list I will show you step by step how to do this.

Create once and replicate

I will also share with you a ‘cut and paste’ strategy anyone can use with blogs so once you have built one blog and mastered the art of making money from it then you just replicate it as many times as you want. I have a basic rule of ‘getting a rope across the river’ before commencing on any large amount of work so I always begin with building a ’concept car’ that I develop into a blueprint that I can try out, refine and replicate, to do this you have to really understand what methods and tools you need to use.

The effect of back links on your web pages

backlinks

Before putting any effort whatsoever into creating any web pages you should have considered how you intend to get people to visit and ‘consume’ your content. Be it selling a product or service or conveying an opinion or information you want to get attention and this means getting traffic. You need a significant proportion of your traffic to come from the search engines. The most economical and focused traffic is delivered by the search engines.

Search engine revenues rely upon the accuracy and relevance of the results they deliver to their users. Searchers will return over and over again to a search engine that delivers the most relevant results. User loyalty directly translates to a stronger brand and higher revenues for the search engines. The search engine objectives are very similar to the ones you should set for your web pages.Make your users experience your number one priority so they return to your web pages time and time again.

So how do you do this?. You have two options and you can use both. You can write useful and relevant content or you can use the advertising methods offered by search engines and other properties.

Without a keyword or a key phrase search engines will simply ignore content. Searches always begin with the entry of a keyword or phrase into the ‘search box’. The search engine goes and looks in its vast index of web pages and selects the most relevant web pages and then returns them in a list that is ordered in terms of relevance and authority. The two factors that decide what results a search engine returns are authority and relevancy.

Authority is a function of the back links to a web page and relevance is largely down to on page factors such as the number of times a keyword appears on the web page. The number and authority of the back links to a web page help the search engine determine the position the web page will occupy in the list of pages.

Back links are the sledge hammers of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).

Back links have two important properties their ability to influence your page ranking and their ability to bring traffic to your site from places on the Internet. Users finding web pages with back links to your web page will click on your back links and visit your site if the keyword text in your back link is relevant to what they are searching for. ‘Anchor text’ is the name given to the text label on a back link and is used by the search engines in assessing the value of a back link. Each back link has a value associated with it which can vary depending upon its origin.

The search engines give authority to web pages which can be passed on to your web pages through the back links. The higher the authority of the web page ‘sending’ the back link the more authority is likely to received by your web pages.
